Definite “must do” in Venice!

We did the private evening stroll with Nico. Although ours didn’t include private access to St. Marks (not sure it is currently an option). Nico did a fabulous job of taking us through the “streets” of Venice from the very busy campo San Giacometto to the quieter local neighborhoods. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. The tour started at 7:00 and we had just arrived in Venice late that afternoon so it was our first glimpse of the city. So glad we took this tour because Venice looks very different from day to night. Also, highly recommend the private tour.

I liked the fact that Livtours offers private tours as we have a varied group, ranging from kids to grandparents, so we don’t feel like we are holding anyone else back as we took our time. Marie was our lovely tour guide with a witty sense of humor, who shared the sites and history of Venice to our family. She kept my preteen and teen engaged by sharing unique tidbits. She had lived in Venice for a bit, so it was nice to hear her perspective of how it has changed over the years. The tour started at 7:30pm, which was a perfect time to start as it was a really hot August day and it cooled down a bit by that time. I hadn’t really read up on Venice before visiting, so appreciated learning all the little interesting facts as we went from site to site. By far the best part of this specific walking tour was being able to visit the inside of St. Mark’s Basilica at night. No need to fight any crowds - when we went there were only two other small groups, so we had a very intimate viewing. It was awesome to watch it gradually go from darkness to fully lit up. What a sight to behold - the warm hue of light on the golden mosaics covering the entire ceiling and more was amazing. Just wow, so beautiful. Definitely a worthwhile opportunity, especially if you want to appreciate the golden artwork in this normally dark church.
