An historical walk and immersion into the heart of the Jewish ghetto to discover the secrets of the 1st Jewish Ghetto of the world. We will avoid the tourist trail exploring an authentic, lesser-known, but incredible, well-preserved area of Venice, full of charme, enjoying the secret corners of the three ghettos of Venice.
You will learn why the Serenissima Republic forced the Jewish community to live under strict rules and how they lived for centuries in Cannaregio. You will discover how changed the area in the centuries.
Did you know that the word "ghetto" comes from a local venetian word?
I will help you to recognize the hidden synagogues from outside and I will give you insights into the tragedy of the deportation and how the Holocaust left a deep mark on my beloved Venice. We will explore together the sestier of Cannaregio, with its beautiful streets and the venetian "skyscrapers", we will cross beautiful bridges draped in the locals' laundry, Italian style.

I was so lucky to be part of this small friendly group and to learn about how the Italian word “getto” means “foundry” ….the Venetian Ghetto was established on the site of a old foundry .
Lucia sat us down in a nearby park where she explained many things ( and showed us maps and photographs ) of how the Venetian Ghetto began, in fact there are three Ghetto areas. We then walked to the Ghetto areas and were treated to a delicious kosher cake , and learnt more about the life in the Ghettos.
Lucia is a passionate and articulate speaker and we learnt of her own interests in Judaism and opinions were shared within the group.
The tour is really interesting and very moving , walking through comparatively quiet , genuine and non touristy areas was especially lovely . In perhaps , the slightly unreal aspects to much of Venice , this is a really worthwhile and real area to visit - and Lucia was the best person to be with !
