San Francesco del Deserto
San Francesco del Deserto is a small and quiet island in the Venice Lagoon, located between the island of Burano and the island of Sant'Erasmo. The island of San Francesco houses a Franciscan convent (Frati Minori) founded in 1230. It is surrounded by sandbanks and is wrapped around its perimeter by cypresses and pines
It is said that in 1220 St. Francis of Assisi stayed there in retreat for a short time, returning from the East and from the Fifth Crusade (not to fight, but to peacefully meet Malek-el-Kamel, Sultan of Egypt).
At that time there was already a small Byzantine church on the island where St. Francis stopped to reflect and pray. The visit of San Francesco del Deserto from Burano will infuse you with a unique perspective of the island, which will reveal itself to you little by little, like a floating garden steeped in history and spirituality.
